On September 4, 2024, the SEVA Charitable Trust organised a unique cultural and spiritual outing for Indian seniors, offering them a memorable visit to the Baitul Muqeet Mosque of the Ahmadiyya Community in Manurewa, Auckland. This event was part of SEVA’s ongoing efforts to engage seniors from diverse backgrounds in enriching experiences that foster learning and unity.

A Warm Welcome and Eye-Opening Experience

As the seniors arrived at the mosque, they were greeted with warmth and hospitality, which set the tone for the day. The Ahmadiyya community opened its doors and hearts, giving the visitors a tour of the mosque and explaining its philosophy, values, and dedication to humanitarian service. For many, this was their first time visiting a mosque, and the experience left them in awe of the inclusivity and compassion at the heart of the Ahmadiyya sect.

The seniors were particularly moved by the community’s emphasis on shared human values—compassion, respect, and a commitment to serving humanity. The visit bridged cultural divides, highlighting the importance of unity in Auckland’s diverse society. After the tour, the mosque management provided a delicious lunch, further enhancing the spirit of togetherness that marked the day.

Reflections on the Visit

Former Member of Parliament and SEVA’s General Manager, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, acknowledged the impact of the visit on the seniors. “It was an eye-opening experience for many who visited a mosque for the first time. We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Bashir Khan, the mosque's president, and his team for their generous hospitality and support,” Bakshi said.

Nilima Venkat, Head of Operations at SEVA, emphasised the importance of such outings for the seniors. “Our goal is to provide seniors with opportunities to experience different cultures within Auckland’s multicultural landscape. These outings, which we organise monthly, are designed to be both entertaining and educational,” she noted.

Voices from the Community

The positive response from the seniors was overwhelming. Sumati Swami, a SEVA Trust member, said, “The visit to the Baitul Muqeet Mosque was a new experience for us, and very educational. We learned about true Islamic values, which was enlightening.”

Florinda Pereira Azavedo, another senior participant, expressed her deep admiration for the mosque’s spiritual atmosphere. “This was my first time visiting a mosque, and it left a profound impression. The presentation was simple yet powerful, and the prayer hall for women was particularly soul-stirring. Despite some differences, there’s so much commonality between our Bible and the Koran. This experience will stay with me forever.”
