Hindu Women Forum Completes Historic Tongariro Alpine Crossing

14 members of the Hindu Women Forum, along with their families, successfully completed the iconic Tongariro Alpine Crossing in November

In a remarkable first, 14 members of the Hindu Women Forum, along with their families, successfully completed the iconic Tongariro Alpine Crossing in November. This 19.4-kilometre trek through Tongariro National Park, renowned for its volcanic landscapes and cultural significance, was organised as a women’s empowerment initiative by the Hindu Women Forum, a division of the Hindu Council of New Zealand.

The event brought participants from Auckland, Rotorua, and Wellington together, transforming the challenging hike into a community experience of resilience, support, and spiritual connection.

New call-to-action

Overcoming Challenges Together

Despite initial weather warnings that caused some last-minute cancellations, the group was greeted with ideal hiking conditions. Starting in the misty morning, the skies cleared as they climbed, offering stunning views and a tranquil atmosphere that enhanced the journey.

The trek symbolised more than physical endurance. For the women involved, it was a journey of personal growth, a testament to the power of community, and an opportunity to connect with the cultural and spiritual heritage of the landscape.

Although plans for yoga and meditation at the summit were adjusted, the group began and concluded their trek with Hindu prayers, finding spiritual solace amidst the natural beauty.

Voices from the Trail

Participants shared their reflections on the empowering experience:
- Sunita Patel (Auckland): “I’ve always wanted to complete the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and this event gave me the perfect opportunity. The day felt magical—a blessing from nature. It reminded me of the incredible things we can achieve when we come together and support one another.”
- Namitha Raj (Wellington): “The Crossing has been on my bucket list for years. Joining this group helped me push my limits and experience the sheer beauty of the Emerald Lake, Blue Lake, and Red Crater. It’s an unforgettable trek that words can hardly capture.”
- Shaveta Gupta (Rotorua): “This was an empowering experience. Completing such a challenging trek with the support of other women was amazing. It reinforced my belief that nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself.”
- Komal Sahani (Rotorua), one of the event organisers, highlighted the success of the
initiative: "Following this event’s overwhelming success, we plan to make it an annual programme. It’s a fantastic way to bring women together, foster new friendships, and support one another in a
collective journey of empowerment."

Looking Ahead: February 2025

Building on the success of the November hike, the Hindu Women Forum is organising a second Tongariro Alpine Crossing event on Saturday, 22 February 2025, with an alternate date set for 1 March 2025. Women of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to participate in this unique opportunity to challenge themselves, connect with nature, and foster lasting friendships.
