Handicrafts, Jewellery, & Holika Dahan: Rotorua Gears Up For Holi

Following the success of the Rotorua Ethnic Markets in July, September, and October 2024, the next edition is set to take place on Friday, 14 March 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Hindu Heritage Centre, 225 Malfroy Road, Rotorua.
The market will feature a diverse selection of traditional crafts, clothing, jewellery, artwork, home decor, and an enticing range of vegetarian delicacies. These offerings will celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Rotorua’s ethnic communities, providing attendees with an immersive and authentic experience.
"We were thrilled with the community's response to our previous Ethnic Markets, which were held alongside Guru Purnima and Deepawali festivals. Now, we are excited to bring this vibrant market together with the celebration of Holi," said Komal Sahani, coordinator of the Rotorua Ethnic Market.
As in previous events, the market is expected to attract visitors from Rotorua and surrounding regions, including Taupo, Tauranga, Hamilton, and Auckland. This free, family-friendly event offers an opportunity to savour vegetarian cuisine, support local artisans, and engage with a unique Dharmic tradition.
“The Hindu Heritage Centre aims to establish the Rotorua Ethnic Market as a regular event, integrating celebrations and festivals from various ethnic communities. This initiative fosters cultural exchange, strengthens community bonds, and enhances Rotorua’s vibrant multicultural landscape,” said Dr Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand
Holika Dahan Celebration to Follow Ethnic Market
Immediately following the Ethnic Market, the Rotorua Fiji Indian Community will host a grand Holika Dahan ceremony as part of the Holi Festival. The ceremony will take place from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Hindu Heritage Centre and will feature music, cultural performances, and a strong sense of community spirit.
Holika Dahan is a sacred bonfire ritual symbolising the triumph of good over evil, marking a significant aspect of Holi celebrations. Attendees will have the chance to participate in prayers, storytelling, and cultural activities that highlight the festival’s historical and spiritual significance.
“Holi is a festival that unites people in joy and harmony. Holika Dahan plays a significant role in these celebrations,” said Narayan Reddy, representative of the Rotorua Fiji Indian Community. “We are delighted to collaborate with the Hindu Heritage Centre to celebrate this meaningful occasion, fostering cultural appreciation and community unity.”
Families, friends, and individuals from all backgrounds are warmly invited to take part in this lively celebration, where music, laughter, and vibrant colours will create unforgettable memories.
