The Hindu Heritage Centre in Rotorua recently hosted an International Coffee Painting Exhibition by Indian artist Uday Korde from October 18 to 20, 2024. Sponsored by the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy, the exhibition was officially opened by Dr. Margriet Theron ONZM, President of the Rotorua Multicultural Council.
The opening night, which brought together members of Rotorua’s arts community, provided an opportunity to meet the artist and explore his creative process. Korde, a seasoned artist with extensive experience in India, shared insights into the distinctive art form of coffee painting. Despite this being his first international showcase, Korde has held numerous exhibitions and workshops in his home country.
Mayor of Rotorua, Tania Tapsell, though unable to attend the opening, invited Korde to her office to recognise his work. She was presented with a custom coffee painting of herself, expressing admiration for the detailed craftsmanship. "I'm truly impressed by the intricate detail and craftsmanship in your work," she said.

Reflecting on his experience, Korde praised Rotorua for its stunning setting and cultural richness, adding that he plans to bring his exhibition to other cities in New Zealand, including Auckland, Hamilton, and Wellington.
Initially, the exhibition was to feature works brought from India, but at the suggestion of Dr. Guna Magesan, President of the Hindu Council of New Zealand, Korde created new pieces featuring prominent New Zealand figures and landmarks. Portraits of Sir Edmund Hillary, Sir Richard Hadlee, Sir Howard Morrison, and Mayor Tania Tapsell, alongside landmarks like Auckland’s Sky Tower and the Rotorua Museum, captivated visitors.

By popular demand, Korde will showcase a selection of his works at the upcoming New Zealand Hindu Elders Conference on October 26, 2024.

The Hindu Heritage Centre continues to be a vibrant cultural hub, offering regular classes and expanding its cultural events, with plans to introduce Mehndi and Rangoli classes soon.
