Veteran Filmmaker Shyam Benegal Passes Away at 90
Renowned Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away on December 23 at the age of 90. He died at 6:30 pm after reportedly battling kidney-related issues. The news was confirmed by his daughter, Pia Benegal, to India Today Digital.
Benegal, widely regarded as a pioneer of parallel cinema in India, had recently celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14 with a grand gathering of family and friends. The celebration was attended by notable personalities, including actors Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Divya Dutta, Shabana Azmi, Rajit Kapur, Atul Tiwari, and filmmaker-actor Kunal Kapoor, the son of Shashi Kapoor.
Known for his impactful storytelling, Benegal was honoured with prestigious civilian awards by the Indian government. He received the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. His critically acclaimed films, such as Manthan, Zubeidaa, and Sardari Begum, continue to hold a special place in Indian cinema.
Benegal's death marks the end of an era in Indian filmmaking, leaving behind a rich legacy that has inspired generations of storytellers.
