21-year-old Indian dies after drowning incident in Auckland

In a tragic incident, a young Indian boy has died after an unfortunate drowning incident in West Auckland.

Akhil Tangri, 21, was found dead in the water at Maori Bay near Muriwai, West Auckland on Friday, December 1.

Police received a report of a person in trouble in the water at approximately 3:35 p.m on Friday, to which emergency services responded and located the Mr Tangri dead in the water.

The boy hailed from Ludhiana city in Punjab, India and had come to New Zealand as a student in July this year.

According to Mr Tangri's friend, he was out with two friends to celebrate the birthday of one of them. They went to play paintball earlier in the day and while returning they decided to go to Muriwai beach for swimming.

When the boys were swimming, all three of them were swept away by a high tide. While the two of them survived, Mr Tangri could not be saved resulting in this tragic incident.

Police spoke with the witnesses and has been providing support to the man’s friends.

Consulate of India in Auckland and the Indian High Commission in Wellington are in touch with the Police and the concerning authorities to assist the family and friends of the deceased in this difficult time.
