Migrant Careers holds workshop on Governance

Migrant Careers Support Trust, which has been active in the community for the past three years, had an end-of-year event on December 9. It comprised a panel discussion on ‘Careers in Governance’. The panellists included Raf Manji, Leader of the Opportunities Party; Mitali Purohit, Principal, Nuance Connected Capital; and Malcom Fraser, Program Director, The i4 Institute and a Governance New Zealand representative. The discussion was moderated by Garry Gupta, Chairperson of the Trust.

This workshop was a sample of things to come, said Gupta. He commented, “We will be partnering with Governance NZ next year, to deliver workshops for migrants, on how to navigate a career in governance. With rising awareness of diversity on board, NZ companies are looking for varied talent to sit on boards. We need to ensure that there is a good talent pool as well, that is well informed and trained to take up the job. This initiative is in that direction.”

This was followed by an acknowledgement of the ‘Career Clinic’ experts who have guided skilled migrants with counselling. Under this project, each candidate gets three customised 1-2-1 hour-long sessions with career consultants, completely free of cost.

A series of recorded and live feedback from those who had benefited from the career workshops and counselling in the past six months was presented at the event. The event was a tribute to both the silent workers and the facilitators who work tirelessly behind the scene, as well as those whose lives are touched by these gestures.

Migrant Careers will continue to hold the career clinic and job seeker workshops in the next year. The schedule will be announced in January 2023.
