Well-known experts to hold free guidance sessions for youth
The high paced, highly globalised and technology-driven society that we live in has
undergone a drastic change in the past few years. While everyone has been affected
by these changes, it is our youth that have been most impacted by these changes.
From looking for ways to manage the pressure to succeed in every area of life to
higher rates of mental health problems through to alcohol and drug abuse and
sexual health issues, today's youth is dealing with many problems.
And taking a cue from the same, the Auckland Indian Association Inc. (AIAI) is
organising an event called Youth Forum on Saturday, 30 April 2022, at the Mahatma
Gandhi Centre, 145 New North Road, Auckland.
Puspa Lekinwala, Vice President, AIAI, and Chairperson, Youth Committee says,
“The main idea of the Youth Forum is to allow youth to learn and engage on many
issues affecting them, which range from including Bullying, Mental Health,
depression and peer pressure to name a few. We believe that it is indispensable to
have youngsters engage with society positively."
Interestingly, the event, which will start at 11 am and continue till 3 pm, will have
popular psychologist, author and television personality Nigel Latta and corporate
leader and life coach David Downs as guest speakers. It will be open to those 11
years and upwards.
The registration is free, and lunch will be provided.
Nigel Latta, a renowned clinical psychologist, author, documentary maker, and
motivational speaker, will be talking about a range of youth-centric topics, including
social media pressure, mental health, time management, and cyberbullying. He was
appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2012 Queen's Birthday
and Diamond Jubilee Honours for services as a psychologist.
David Downs is currently Chief Executive of NZ Story (a government-owned
marketing organisation). He has had a successful career in both the private and
public sectors, with senior roles at organisations such as Microsoft and New Zealand
Trade and Enterprise. He is also a published author, an ex-comedian, TV and Radio
personality and semi-finalist for New Zealander of the Year. For the uninitiated,
David battled terminal cancer, and he will be discussing resilience with the youth at
the event.
Lekinwala stresses that this event is the beginning of many events by AIA that will
cater to youth. She says, “It is the beginning of many workshops, forums, team
building and fun activities to engage youth in our community to become confident,
motivated, and build self-esteem and can provide a meaningful role in the society."
