Haryana federation New Zealand – a community organisation for migrants from the Indian state of Haryana - had its annual general meeting on Sunday, June 21 in Auckland.
The meeting intended to bring together the members of the organisation at one platform and apprise them of the activities taken up by the executive committee in the last 12 months and share the details of the audit of the last year.
Haryana Federation New Zealand is a relatively young diaspora organisation formed in 2019 and has been actively working in the realm of community service, specially in the form of sport & cultural activities, blood donation camps, and free food banks.
The key emphasis is to bring together migrants from the Indian state of Haryana so as to give them an opportunity to socialise and network in a culturally appropriate manner.
Speaking to the Indian Weekender, Gurbaj Singh Mall, one of the co-founders of the organisation (Kanwaljeet Singh Cheema is the other co-founder) said, “We discussed and decided to further focus on organising more blood donation camps and food distribution banks in the coming year.”
“It was also discussed to initiate some more community activities which further deepen social cohesion and interconnectedness within different communities in New Zealand,” Cheema said.
“The other main discussion in the AGM was around the celebrations of Haryana Day next year,” Gurbaj Singh said.
For the uninitiated, Haryana Day is celebrated on November 1, to mark the anniversary when the independent state was created in 1966. The day marks many celebrations in Haryana, India,
The members of the Haryana Federation of New Zealand expressed aspirations to commemorate the next Haryana Day in New Zealand.
Many members of the association attended the meeting, including Aran Cheema, Gurbaj Mall, Ravi Gangaj, Prince Kajal, Manish Snehamar, Karampal, Abhishek Dahiya, Harjot Bhatti, Nirvair Varach, Mandeep Manes.
Elaborating further on some other important decisions taken in the first AGM, Gurbaj Singh told the Indian Weekender that a decision was made to form a special team of volunteers to help the community during any crisis or distress.
